MATT BORENGASSER: PAINTINGS
Early Work (oil)
Inspired by the impressionists, the Society of Six, color field painters and minimalists, abstract expressionism, fauvism, etc. these works were created seomwhere between 1992 and 2000. Many are university assignments, but not all.
Hover over for descriptions.
The courtyard outside the building where our studios were there on the LSU campus. Spring, 1992 studying under Jean Cohen. Spring, 1992.
24x36 inches maybe. A still life assignment lasting about two weeks. Professor John Malveto set up bizarre still life arrangements made up of all kinds of unrelated stuff.
24x30 inches. Another Malveto still life.
Malveto still life. 24x30 inches.
This is a painting inspired by a childhood memory of playing in a large tree on the LSU campus when I was very little. The tree had limbs that grew out along the ground, some going into the ground so that it created a large dome. When I went back to LSU to study, I found the tree again. App. 40x48inches.
This is the second of two color field paintings. This painting is inspired by the driver from Arkansas to Louisiana that I would make each year on my way too and from university. The highway passed through the Mississippi delta. Along the way I would see these little white churches that belonged to small villages. The painting style originated from looking at Hans Hofman's work. App. 40x48 inches
This is another painting inspired by Hans Hoffman's push-pull color usage. I guess this is the beginning of the intentional study of color in my paintings. 3x5 ft.
18x18 inches. One of the paintings made while painting with Wang Yu Ping in the Temple of Heaven grounds in Beijing. That morning we painted people practicing Tai-Chi in the woods.
36x48 inches. This painting was inspired by Hans Hoffman and various misconceptions about action painting. It was one of the last paintings I made as a student at LSU.
A painting of Akiko Yamamoto, a Japanese exchange student who I met at the cafe. I painted two paintings of her. 30x36 inches

A painting of Emily Qiu, a phd. student from China who I met on campus at LSU. I painted two paintings of her. 30x36cm
A painting for a class assignment to paint a dream. The subject is a painter painting a nude figure.
I painted this one evening after arguing with my parents who had come to see my sister and I. I had just returned from China. LSU, Fall Semester, 1992.
One of 4paintings from figure drawing class. I set up 4 easels with canvases that I found in the garbage dumpster and painted four paintings of the model.
