OLIVIA-SURFACES
Olivia was born on April 20th, 2015. In late February we ordered stretchers and canvas and began creating large surfaces to cover the walls of an otherwise barren faculty apartment. I chose water surfaces, isolated and enlarged from May's Xihu landscapes. This was my first utilitarian project, functional from the beginning and truly inspired. Purpose gave life to the project. The paintings had a rough start with the first one sketched out roughly. I applied the use of a grid to the rest to insure a strong underdrawing that would let me concentrate on color, expression and a more free interpretation. And the took off, making use of the same small strokes of the plein air originals but with more gusto and scale. Gradually the paintings evolved alongside each other. For now the series is "to be continued". (Oil on linen, 140x140cm to 150x200cm)
